About San Gimignano
The San Gimignano Cathedral (Collegiata) is situated off Piazza del Duomo. It is a Romanesque Cathedral which has some amazing frescos hidden within its interior. There are particularly striking frescos situated between the black and white striped arches, while at the rear of the Church by the main entrance, there are fresco’s by Taddeo di Bartolo and Benozzo Gozzoli. Along the southern wall there are fresco’s by Bartolo di Fredi, depicting scenes from the Old Testament. On the northern wall are fresco’s by Barna da Siena of the New testament. Another delight of this church is the Renaissance Cappella di Santa Fina, situated beside it. Inside there is the tomb by Beneddetto da Maiano made for the saint and two striking fresco’s by Domenico Ghirlandaio.

Museo D’Arte Sacra San Gimignano

The Museo D’Arte Sacra San Gimignano houses a collection of religious art including a triptych of the Madonna and Child by Bartolo di Fredi, illustrated choir books and a piece by Sabastiano Mainardi.

Palazzo del Popolo San Gimignano

The Palazzo del Popolo San Gimignano, inside which there is the Museo Civico, houses many interesting works. Some to mention Taddeo di Bartolo’s piece depicting the life of San Gimignano (a Bishop), medieval religious works such as the Crocifisso by Coppo di Marcovaldo, the maestrà by Lippo Memmi and fresco’s by Memmo di Filippuccio. After viewing the art, you can climb the tower, Torre Grossa, to view the beautiful scenery.

Museo Archeologico and Sperziera di Santa Fina San Gimignano

The Museo Archeologico (Archeological Museum) houses various pieces from the Etruscan/Roman and medieval era, as well as an art gallery with works by Renato Guttuso and Raffaele de Grada. The Sperziera di Santa Fina, a former 16th century hospital, has ceramics and glass containers, many of which are beautifully painted. There is another room filled with herbs and spices used for curative potions and lotions.

Museo della Tortura San Gimignano

The Museo della Tortura San Gimignano (Torture Museum), housed in the Torre del Diavolo, has everything you may expect about Medieval torturing devises: racks, chastity belts, bone crunching manacles and more, with descriptions of their use and history. Some of the paintings and historical etchings mean children may need to be accompanied by an adult.

The Collezione Ornitologica San Gimignano has a collection of stuffed birds dating back to 1886.
